"MACHINE ORGANISM"
The building is inspired by biological and geological forms and further informed by form-finding studies. It is intended as an altered landscape, with sloping levels that reach down toward the ground and reverse the current edge condition of the site, flaring up toward the water instead of sloping down into it. The leaves of the floors and roofs are not rationalized into geometric forms but appear irrational, even accidental.

The aesthetics of nature present in the design follow from criticisms of humankind's construction of itself as one side in a struggle between civilization and "wilderness." In response to the initial ecological impetus for the project, the design provokes questions regarding what constitutes worthy ecological behavior and attempts to behave as a model component of an artificial landscape.

Course Description: This is the final studio in a series of four core design studios. This studio emphasizes the integrative nature of architectural design, the complexities of a design proposal’s contexts and programmatic requirements, and the deployment of a variety of architectural mediums in the design process. A project of moderate complexity engages students in a design investigation for a site situated in a dense urban context.
